Petra outplays Garcia to return to Madrid QFs

No.2 seed Petra Kvitova powered into her fifth career quarterfinal at the Mutua Madrid Open without dropping a set after fighting past Caroline Garcia in the third round.

Kvitova, the defending champion, looked right at home at the Caja Magica against Garcia, needing just a break in each set to seal the 6-3, 6-3 victory.

Her three Mutua Madrid Open titles make her the winningest champion in tournament history, having also won here in 2011 and 2015. Today’s win just adds to Kvitova’s stellar numbers, recording her ninth straight victory at this tournament and extending her WTA tour-leading match wins figure to 27.

Up next, Kvitova will take on a familiar opponent when she faces No.7 seed Kiki Bertens for a spot in the semifinals. Bertens eased past No.12 Anastasija Sevastova 6-1, 6-2 earlier in the day to book a rematch of last year’s Madrid Open final.

Kvitova leads the pair’s head-to-head record with three wins to two, with their most recent meeting coming a few weeks ago in Stuttgart. Kvitova claimed that win 7-6(3), 3-6, 6-1. / photos: Jimmie48 Tennis Photography
