Top seed Petra Kvitova was nearly untouchable in her opening match at the St. Petersburg Ladies Trophy, winning in two sets against former World No.1 Victoria Azarenka in their highly anticipated second-round clash.
After a dominant performance in the opening set, Kvitova saw a 5-1 lead slip away in the second as Azarenka mounted a late comeback effort, but the Czech dug herself out of trouble in the end to win 6-2, 7-6(3).
“I’ve just come from Melbourne, I’ve just hit for the first time today at my warm-up and played the match today,” Kvitova told press afterwards. “I think I played it very well, it’s important. I’m very happy to be here.
“The crowd is amazing as always. I really love to come back and play here.
It’s a beautiful tournament and I love playing indoors.”
Through to the quarterfinals in St. Petersburg , the two-time Wimbledon winner Kvitova will face either No.8 seed Donna Vekic or Russia’s Veronika Kudermetova, a lucky loser, for a spot in the final four.
