Petra Kvitova’s mastery over Elina Svitolina continued on Thursday in Doha, as the Czech No.16 seed won her seventh straight match against the Ukrainian World No.3 to book her spot in the Qatar Total Open quarterfinals, 6-4, 7-5.
A late break in Svitolina’s last service game of each set helped Kvitova move safely through to the quarterfinals in Doha for the third time in her career, though she has never advanced further than the last eight in Qatar.
In seven straight victories which has improved the head-to-head between the two to 7-1 in Kvitova’s favor, the Czech has now won 12 straight sets.
Kvitova last dropped a set in the head-to-head in their third match, as she came from a set down to win in Dubai in 2015, but she has not lost to Svitolina since their first-ever meeting in Cincinnati in 2014.
Her attacking tennis once again won out over Svitolina’s stellar defense, as Kvitova struck 34 winners to 23 unforced errors – doubling the Ukrainian’s total in each column – over the course of the 89-minute encounter.
